A key step to curbing global warming is a Clean Cars program requiring automakers to implement the latest technologies to reduce pollution.

Environment Colorado is knocking on doors and hitting the streets to bolster action on global warming.
“It’s time for Colorado to join other states and take strong action on global warming,” said Environment Colorado’s Isaac Silverman. “We need a plan that sets specific goals for reducing global warming pollution and lays out a path for how we get there.”
Environment Colorado is calling on Gov. Bill Ritter to set science-based solutions to global warming and a specific goal to reduce carbon emissions 70 to 80 percent by 2050.
To get there, we are recommending that Gov. Ritter create a task force to set up a plan and timetable for reaching that goal.
This proposal echoes what governors in Arizona, Montana, and New Mexico are already implementing. All three of these states have formed advisory panels. California recently made a historic move by setting enforceable limits on global warming pollution.
We have many available tools that have proved effective in addressing global warming pollution. First, we should implement The Plan for Colorado’s New Energy Future, which requires doubling Colorado’s use of renewable energy to 20 percent by 2015. The Plan alone would reduce carbon emissions by 7.1 million metric tons per year.
The Plan also calls for other measures to reduce pollution, including increasing energy efficiency 10 percent and renewable fuel use, such as biodiesel and cellulosic ethanol, 10 percent by 2015, and setting up a Clean Cars Program.
If we are to avoid some of the most dramatic effects of global warming, we need to begin implementing these solutions now. |
