Environment Colorado Summer Report 2006

Clean Cars Program would cut global warming pollution

Snowy Mountain
Global warming threatens Colorado’s water supply by reducing the snowpack’s water reserves.

To address the growing problem of global warming, Environment Colorado is advocating practical solutions like the Clean Cars Program, cleaning up power plants, and increasing energy efficiency.

“Too often, common sense global warming solutions are treated as if they are short-term sacrifices that must be made to avoid the disastrous impacts of unchecked global warming pollution on our environment and economy,” said Environment Colorado’s Isaac Silverman.

“The fact of the matter is that we have technological solutions that will not only curb global warming pollution from cars and power plants to protect Colorado’s future, but also make our lives better right now.”

Practical steps against global warming
Cutting global warming pollution from our state’s fleet of cars and light trucks is one of the steps proposed by Environment Colorado. The Clean Cars Program, which has already been adopted by 10 states, cuts global warming pollution and can save consumers money at the pump.

The Clean Cars program requires automakers to use existing technology to make improvements to conventional cars and trucks. These improvements range from making simple adjustments to employing groundbreaking new technology to make every car and truck produce less global warming pollution.

Besides reducing the amount of global warming, cleaner cars means paying less money for fuel. The California Air Resources Board investigated the economic impact of implementing the Clean Cars Program and found that consumers experienced a net benefit due to savings at the pump.

Estimated savings are between $3-7 dollars per month assuming a fuel cost of $1.74 across the range of passenger vehicles. When individual savings are added up, adopting the Clean Cars program would save Coloradans millions of dollars annually.

Global warming represents a serious threat to Colorado, but increased awareness is also giving environmental advocates an opportunity to enact real change.
