Once again, the Bush administration has proposed an energy plan that takes steps backward in protecting our environment and providing a clean energy future. The Bush proposal would increase our dependence on fossil fuels, give more subsidies to dirty, unsustainable energy sources, and weaken environmental protections.

We can use America’s and Colorado’s technological know-how to increase production from clean renewable sources of energy and make our cars, homes and appliances more energy efficient. However, the oil, coal, utility, auto and many other industries are working to maintain the status quo by fighting legislation that promotes renewable energy and lobbying for legislation, such as the Bush plan, that subsidizes dirty energy sources.

Environment Colorado is continuing to work toward a safe, clean, affordable energy future. In November, Colorado voters took a giant step toward that future by passing a renewable energy standard on the ballot. The Bush plan threatens to increase drilling in our wild spaces and make it easier to build dirty power plants that will pollute our air. Colorado has demonstrated that clean, renewable energy can be part of a viable energy strategy and it is time to carry that message to the rest of the country.
