Environment Colorado Summer Report 2006

Carbon is booming

From issues of Time Magazine and Vanity Fair dedicated to global warming, to Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” global warming is finally getting the media attention it deserves. Thanks to years of research and advocacy from groups like Environment Colorado, and a growing consensus in the scientific community, it is now evident: we need to take action now

This summer Environment Colorado released a report entitled “The Carbon Boom,” about our rising carbon emissions, the main cause of global warming. The report found that in Colorado carbon emissions have increased 221 percent since 1960.

Coal power

Half of this increase is due to coal combustion—mostly used in coal power plants. To curb our carbon, we need to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency at the state level and create a carbon cap-and-trade system at the federal level.
